Description

Aging contributes to fractures in both women and men. Cellular changes in the skeleton of aged mice mirror those in humans. Bone loss mechanisms differ between trabecular and cortical bone, involving low and high remodeling, respectively. Cellular senescence, DNA damage, and the activation of pathways involving p53/p21 and GATA4 are key factors. Systemic clearance of senescent cells and targeted genetic modifications are being studied to understand their roles in bone aging. The project aims to determine whether senescence in osteoblast lineage cells and osteocytes contributes to age-related bone loss, focusing on cortical versus trabecular bone differences.
