This award funds research to produce cultured red blood cells from stem cells using genetic modifications, aiming to improve transfusion medicine especially for Sickle Cell Disease patients.
Description
Develop a cost-effective method for producing cultured red blood cells (cRBCs) from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) by introducing specific genetic mutations to generate self-renewing erythroblasts capable of proliferating without cytokines and differentiating into enucleated cRBCs at high rates. Includes large-scale production, antigen profile characterization, and development of adult hemoglobin-expressing SREs for transfusion support.
