This NIH-funded research project investigates the effects of resistance training and bisphosphonate medication on bone health during weight loss in older adults, aiming to minimize bone loss through a controlled trial.

Description

A 12 month, 2x2 factorial randomized controlled trial to compare the independent and combined effects of resistance training plus bone loading exercise and bisphosphonate use on dietary weight loss associated bone loss among 392 older adults with obesity at risk for low bone mineral density. The study involves interventions at Wake Forest University and The University of Colorado-Anschutz Medical Campus, with primary outcome being change in total hip areal bone mineral density measured via dual x-ray absorptiometry.
