Advancing Pregnenolone as a Novel Therapy for Co-Occurring Cannabis Use Disorder and Depression

This award funds research to develop pregnenolone as a treatment for individuals with co-occurring cannabis use disorder and major depressive disorder, including regulatory approvals, pharmacokinetic studies, and clinical trials.

Description

Research in both animal models and humans suggests that the non-prescription neurosteroid pregnenolone and allopregnanolone (a neurosteroid made from pregnenolone) may be effective in reducing cannabis use and adverse effects as well as for treating depression. The proposed studies will develop pregnenolone as a treatment for people with cannabis use disorder and major depressive disorder.
