Escambia County is undertaking a restoration project for the Bob Sikes Fishing Pier South to address structural deterioration and enhance safety and accessibility. The project includes substructure repairs, cathodic protection, ADA upgrades, lighting, and potential demolition of irreparable spans, aiming to preserve the pier as a community asset.
Description
The Bob Sikes Fishing Pier is a key public access facility and community landmark on the Santa Rosa Sound side of Pensacola Beach, serving residents and visitors as a popular destination for fishing and recreation. Due to age, marine exposure, and structural wear, the pier requires targeted rehabilitation to ensure continued safety and functionality. This project will restore and enhance the pier through comprehensive substructure repairs, including implementation of cathodic protection systems to mitigate corrosion and extend the structure’s service life. Repairs will address deterioration of piles, caps, and framing elements to maintain structural integrity and public safety. The project also includes ADA upgrades, lighting improvements, and handrail enhancements to improve accessibility, visibility, and overall user safety. The scope may include demolition of the final spans of the pier, depending on contractor bid pricing, where repair is not practical or cost-effective. Overall, the project is intended to preserve the pier as a safe, accessible, and sustainable public asset for long-term community use.
