The award funds research on bat-borne paramyxoviruses in Puerto Rico to assess spillover risk by developing viral reagents and conducting ecological surveillance, aiming to improve pandemic preparedness.
Description
This project investigates paramyxoviruses circulating in bats in Puerto Rico through two aims: developing pseudotyped viral reagents and transfected cell lines to quantify entry potential across receptors for co-roosting bats, livestock, and humans; and using longitudinal surveillance to identify viral shedding windows, ecological factors, and opportunities for cross-species transmission. The data will identify viral traits and ecological conditions that elevate spillover risk, feeding into risk characterization and pandemic preparedness tools. The project also provides mentored experience in molecular virology and ecological surveillance.
