Research project funded by NIAAA to study the interaction between sleep deprivation and binge drinking in college students, aiming to identify biomarkers to reduce alcohol use disorder risks.

Description

This project aims to understand individual differences in how alcohol misuse and poor sleep interact to identify biomarkers that may reduce risk for alcohol use disorders and related health conditions. It builds on an ongoing longitudinal study of college students, mapping the sleep-alcohol relationship onto individual drinking bouts. The study pairs self-reported sleep quality with objective measures such as actigraphy and polysomnography, collected before, during, and after drinking episodes. It involves multiple assessments including sleep duration, timing, fragmentation, sleep architecture, and physiological responses, with a focus on how these factors influence alcohol-related behaviors and health risks.
